Company Overview
Founded in 2004 and headquartered in Fremont,
California, Presto Networks is devoted to advancing the security industry
through innovative
solutions addressing immediate issues in the IP video
surveillance market by significantly increasing network
security and scalability, simplifying installation and integration,
decreasing the capital outlay and installation time, while meeting
the different needs of both the IT department and the security
department.
Designed
exclusively for IP video surveillance application, Presto’s
flagship product, PrestoGate,
is the industry’s first
intelligent appliance, which integrates
both network and video management. PrestoGate creates a camera edge network, handles all network needs of the connected
cameras, delivers power to the cameras, records video streams, and at the
same time, serving live or
recorded video streams upon user request from the data network.
Why We Exist
The video surveillance industry is making the
rapid transition from the traditional analog system to IP based
surveillance system.
However, current implementations, which is based on generic
data network devices, create a highly complex infrastructure with many
points of failure.
·
Security:
Existing data network firewalls are designed to prevent external
attacks (such as Internet),
treating the local area network (LAN)
as a trusted network. IP cameras are part of that trusted network but
physically reside outside the trusted environment; that is, outside the
firewall. As a result, the
entire surveillance LAN is
open to outside. Surveillance networks need to protect from both Internet
and Intranet sources. In
addition, video surveillance systems have many special needs to protect
cameras or recording
devices from Denial of Services (DoS) attacks, network jamming
attacks, and unauthorized access, etc.
"The security industry urgently needs devices designed
exclusively for surveillance installations to address network
security." (AS International, 04/06)
·
Simplicity: Existing network video surveillance systems involve multiple
network devices from multiple vendors.
Each requires its own installation, operation, and maintenance. The
amount of training involved can keep security and IT personnel out of the
field for several weeks in a year. Add
to that the extra burden of remembering the different protocols for each
device (even when performing similar functions) and what should be a
simple process becomes a serious drop in productivity.
·
Scalability:
Video over the network consumes a large amount of bandwidth and the
network can be easily overwhelmed as the number of cameras increases,
especially when mega-pixel cameras are installed on the network. Data
networks treat all packets the same; leaving administrators the dubious
choice of compromising between bandwidth, video quality, and the number of
cameras supported or choosing to only transmit video over the data network
only when certain criteria trigger an alarm.
·
Different
Needs from IT and Security Departments:
The IT department and security department have different and some
times contradictory requirements. IT department needs to maintain the
security and integrity of the network, therefore requires standard
protocol and the ability to control and monitor the bandwidth through
standard network management tools. The security department wants to view
high-quality video, which demands high bandwidth, from cameras from
different vendors, locally and remotely. In addition, the interoperability
between various devices can become problematic because each security
vendor has unique protocols, many of which do not meet IT requirements.
Presto Networks is pioneering an integrated
approach which has a number of distinct and practical advantages,
including lowered cost, faster upgrades, and complementary to a wide
variety of existing video technologies.
Our Vision
Presto is "The Network
Company" of the video surveillance industry.
